Rainbow No. II

20th June 2009

This rainbow actually appeared a week before the one at Carrick-a-rede. For a current assignment I needed an image of Glenveagh National Park. The standard view – lake, mountains, castle – is pretty well known and so far I wasn’t able to figure out a good alternative view. So I decided to go with the well known.
I started my first attempt in the morning. It was dull and grey and after waiting for 2 hours I gave up having not even touched the camera. The evening was much better. Clear skies, a few clouds hanging over the valley and warm evening sunshine. It was almost perfect. However nothing worked and I couldn’t even blame the weather. Under normal circumstances I would have called it off and find another subject but with a deadline hanging over my head I had to produce a decent image.
The next morning was sunshine and showers. I went to a different viewpoint and things started to fall into place. I found an acceptable composition and waited.
After a few minor showers this dark wall of cloud and rain started to roll in across the valley. It was an impressive display and minutes before I got soaked the rainbow – almost a double – appeared.
The composition still isn’t very good but the combination of light and dark, sunshine and rain and of course the rainbow make this image work. Up Donegal!
